The Pen, The Page, and Our National Heroes

On this remarkable day, August 28, 2023, as we commemorate National Heroes Day, the hallways of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) at MSU-IIT resonate not just with the echoes of daily academia, but with the voices of journalistic luminaries. Through their writings, they are the courageous souls who shaped revolutions, raised awareness, and became beacons of the Filipino spirit.

Our history is rich with heroes whose pens sparked movements, challenged tyranny, and enshrined values that we cherish today. Their legacy is more than just their writings; it's the resilient spirit they have imbued in each Filipino.

Dr. Jose Rizal: Undoubtedly, the foremost national hero, Rizal’s writings like "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo" became a clarion call against Spanish colonial rule. His works are not just literary masterpieces but epitomes of how literature can drive a nation towards awakening.

Teodoro Locsin Sr.: Through the Philippines Free Press, he resisted the narrative of the Marcos regime, demonstrating that trustworthy journalism does not bend to authoritarian whims.

Letty Jimenez-Magsanoc: Her stewardship of the Philippine Daily Inquirer during the People Power Revolution serves as a testament to the role journalism plays in echoing the people's voice against tyranny.

Maria Ressa: Facing modern-day challenges, Ressa's unwavering commitment to truth-telling, even in the face of adversity, is a beacon for the current generation.

Nick Joaquin:  Known for his poetic prose and incisive commentaries, Joaquin's writings beautifully intertwined Philippine history, culture, and societal observations, creating a rich tapestry of narratives that remain relevant today.

CASS isn’t just a college; it's a crucible where the next generation of journalistic heroes is being molded. We strive to ensure that every student not only honed their craft but also imbibes the values that make journalism a noble profession.

As National Heroes Day dawns upon us, it's a clarion call to recognize not just the iconic figures of our past but also the unsung heroes whose pens have been their swords. Today, let's not just remember but rekindle the spirit of resilience, truth, and undying Filipino pride that our heroes embodied.

For every word penned down, for every truth unveiled, and for every voice amplified - here's to our heroes, both of the past and those in the making.
