Out with the old, in with the new! Until five years ago, the English Department offered only one course, BA English Language Studies, and referred to their college society as the AB English Organization. However, four years ago, a new course was introduced under the same department: the BA Literary and Cultural Studies. As a result, the moniker "ABEO" no longer fits their society's branding, as it is no longer limited to English language majors.
On the 21st of May, 2024, LILACS was officially introduced as the new society name, replacing ABEO. The abbreviation stands for Literature, Language, and Culture Society, a name that represents its constituents and promotes inclusivity within their diverse society. This historical moment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the English Department, one that embraces a broader scope of academic interests and unites students under a shared passion for language, literature, and culture.
The decision to rebrand was not taken lightly. It came after more than a year of discussions, surveys, and consultations with every person involved to ensure the new name captures the evolving identity of the society. The society's new logo, a stylized lilac flower, symbolizes growth, renewal, and the blooming of new ideas, aligning perfectly with their mission to foster a supportive and inclusive community.
Looking forward, the upcoming administration of LILACS plans to expand its activities, offering a wider range of events and initiatives that cater to both academic and cultural interests. From literary festivals to cultural exchange programs, the society aims to create platforms for students to engage with diverse perspectives and showcase their talents.
As LILACS blossoms, it promises to enrich the academic and social lives of its members, setting an example for how student societies can adapt and thrive in changing times. The future looks bright for LILACS, as it continues to grow and create a colorful, inclusive community within the College of Arts and Social Sciences.
