In a thrilling test of wit driving spectators to the edge of their seats, the Lethal Arachnids clinched the 4th spot after a tie-breaker scene with the Wizard Wolves for the finals round, in the recently concluded Palakasan Ultimate Quizbowl, on April 30, 2024.
The team consisted of John Carl Vincent Dadulo, Dhale Rose Gweneth Solmayor, Hazel Lapura, Kz Vale Zamora, and Crestine Jean Sasil, steered over the scoreboard from the sixth place of the tally during their early run.
Keeping up, they leveled their chance to land a spot for the shortlisted teams after being named part of the top 5. However, following a question on the category of Filipino film, the Wizard Wolves snagged the opportunity to move forward —spelling the fate of CASS at 27 points.
In an interview, Solmayor expressed that throughout their reviews and practices until the contest proper, they have been enjoying the experience.
“Not so serious or anything nin-ana [highly competitive team dynamics]. Gina try sab namo among best while also having fun. After all, that is what competitions are all about: learning and having fun,” she said.
Amid juggling academic responsibilities and time constraints, she thanked the people around them for their support.
“It’s such an honor, especially bringing the name of CASS in this event. Of course, it carries some sort of responsibility to do our best, but with the support of people around us, mas na strengthen amo courage,” Solmayor concluded.
This year’s brawl of brains champions emerged again from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) Space Lynxes, garnering a whopping 60 points and binding an early lead over competitors. The Flaming Dragons with 50 points ranked 2nd, and the Wizard Wolves with 37 points followed suit in 3rd place.
Meanwhile, the Czarina Phoenix, Icy Sharks, and the Griffin Gods rested on 5th, 6th, and 7th spot respectively.
