Loud and Clear: PSYTalk Amplifies Conversations on Mental Health

By Bea Faye Eumague

Spotlighting conversations on stress and time management, strategies for coping with anxiety, preventing burnout, and the importance of self-care practices,  the Psychology Society hosted PSYTalk: Conversations on Mental Health at the CED Amphitheater on October 11, Friday.

These topics sought to provide attendees with practical tools and insights to improve their mental well-being, particularly in the context of balancing academic and personal responsibilities. Leading these significant exchanges were Al Raven Diamante, one of the chairpersons of Iligan Youth Mental Health Advocates (IYMHA), and Dr. Reynald P. Kyamko, the Head of the Office of Guidance and Counseling (OGC).

In his talk, Diamante addressed the importance of maintaining balance in their academic journey, suggesting that student life involves more than just academics. “Sometimes, when we are too focused on our role as a student, we often neglect the other roles we have, and it takes a toll on us,” he stated.

While he acknowledged the value of striving for academic excellence, he cautioned, “As much as we really try to excel in academics, which is a good thing, please do not lose yourself because it is not the only thing that actually runs your life.”

Diamante’s message resonated with attendees, reminding them to prioritize self-care and personal growth. His insights sparked meaningful dialogue on the necessity of balance, encouraging students to reflect on their own experiences.

Dr. Kyamko, on the other hand, spoke passionately about the stigma surrounding mental health support, urging attendees to take action. “Let’s work together to break the stigma associated with seeking professional help,” he said.

He added that seeking mental health support is just as important as consulting a medical doctor for physical ailments.

Marhamah Ali, a BS IT student who attended the event, reflected on a valuable lesson she took away from the discussion. “When someone reaches out, it’s important to ask if they need advice or simply a listening ear. I’ve realized that, as someone who tends to offer advice, it’s not always necessary. Often, people just want to be heard and have a space to share their thoughts.”

The event is part of a broader campaign by the Psychology Society to promote mental wellness, with more initiatives planned throughout the month for all IITians.
