The Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) honored 305 graduates in the 55th Commencement Ceremonies 1st Semester Graduation, held at the university gymnasium on Friday, February 21.
This mid-year graduation saw 35 undergraduate students coming from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), with 14 Magna Cum Laudes and 13 Cum Laudes.
Kyle Christian Tuquib, conferred with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies (BAELS), emerged as the Institute Class Salutatorian and University Leadership Awardee. The batch Valedictorian, Elchie Mae Sutana, hailed from the College of Education (CED) with a Bachelor’s degree in Technology and Livelihood Education, majoring in Home Economics. Meanwhile, Nicole Mikaila Anggot, also a BAELS graduate, was named First Honorable Mention.
Graduates from CASS also racked up prestigious institute distinctions in various fields, namely Zailla Althea Alarde (BS Psychology) for Debate, Jaez Buenson Beduya (BS Psychology) for Music in the Vocal-Male Category, and Alyha Zshiazny Lantud (BAELS) for Journalism.
Twenty-one postgraduates from CASS were also recognized, including three who earned doctoral degrees, five who completed master’s programs, and thirteen who were awarded Certificates in Governmental Management.
Remarkably, its Masters of Public Administration was a joint degree with the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY).
In her welcoming remarks, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Pamela Resurreccion, recalled a familiar tale for graduates that prefigures success with the timeline set forth by their own journey of resilience and reminds them of the process.
“Life, like learning, is continuous. There will always be new challenges, new opportunities, and new beginnings—carry with you the strength that brought you here today and let it guide you into the future,” she expressed, declaring the start of the pre-commencement ceremony that followed the presentation and recognition of the candidates for graduation.
Notably, this first-semester graduation was graced by Dr. Jayeel Cornelio as the commencement speaker, a decorated sociologist and academician who currently serves as the Department of Science and Technology - Science Education Institute’s (DOST-SEI) Director.
University Chancellor Alizedney Ditucalan introduced Dr. Cornelio and at the same time, imparted his welcoming address to graduates during the commencement program. In his speech, he highlighted discernment as a core of the educated amid the vexed reality and the intellectuals’ need to revisit their very own role in this current landscape.
“In the past, the duty of the educated was to seek the truth, today, our duty is to scrutinize; that is, truths in the plural sense. Many pieces of information today masquerade as truth just because they are not false and we need to be equipped to scrutinize their completeness and integrity,” exclaimed the Chancellor.
As MSU-IIT sent off its graduates, conferred and ready to go beyond, these successes driven by reflections in every pause served as a testament of perseverance that excellence is forged by no fast pace but enduring aspirations set ablaze.
