Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) formally opened 2026 in its first flag raising ceremony of the year, bringing together administrators, faculty, staff, and students in a program that underscored institutional unity, leadership, and a deepened commitment to student welfare on Monday, January 12, at the Institute Lawn.
In his New Year address and administration’s report, Chancellor Alizedney Ditucalan reflected on the university’s continuing transformation, citing significant strides in academic excellence, research productivity, governance reforms, and international recognition.
He emphasized that MSU-IIT has evolved into a leading institution whose impact now extends beyond regional boundaries to the national and international academic landscape.
“One word stands out for MSU-IIT—transformation,” he said. “These years have changed the way we see ourselves, not just as an academic institution, but as a national resource for innovation, inclusion, and societal impact.”
The chancellor pointed to the successful implementation of the university’s Five-Year Strategic Roadmap, which strengthened instruction and research, expanded innovation and entrepreneurship, improved administrative efficiency, and advanced equity, diversity, and inclusion.
He also highlighted MSU-IIT’s sustained presence in international rankings, improved licensure examination performance with multiple topnotchers, the expansion of accredited and internationally certified programs, and record-breaking research output supported by major national and international grants.
He further underscored the university’s growing global footprint through expanded international collaborations, dual-degree programs, faculty and student exchanges, and the hosting of major national and international conferences.
Institutional reforms, he noted, were complemented by landmark policies on academic integrity, environmental sustainability, and student welfare, as well as continued investment in campus infrastructure and facilities.
As the university enters the new year, he urged the MSU-IIT community to move forward with “unity, humility, and courage,” reaffirming the institution’s commitment to leading with purpose and impact in 2026.
Messages of solidarity followed from representatives of the faculty, non-teaching employees, and students, reinforcing shared responsibility in advancing the university’s mission.
Faculty Union President Atty. Edgar Alan Donasco described 2026 as a year of renewed drive and resilience, while underscoring the importance of faculty welfare.
“The coming year will be a relentless pursuit for greater heights, but our achievements can only be sustained if we also care for the vitality and well-being of those who carry the work forward,” Donasco highlighted.
Mr. Junaim Dipatuan, the president of the Administrative and Non-Teaching Employees Union, also extended his gratitude to the Chancellor and the whole administration for their continuous support and hopes for a successful year ahead.
“As we begin this new year, let us serve with dedication, integrity, and excellence, while also caring for one another. United and hopeful, we move forward toward lasting success”.
Meanwhile, representing the student body, Dave Andrei Garbanzos, the current KASAMA President, reaffirmed the role of student leadership in promoting accountability and inclusivity, noting that student participation remains central to institutional progress.
“Today, I stand here not just as your president, but as the representative of over 10,000 MSUans. The strength of our campus does not rest on the councils alone, it is fueled by our student organizations. With your continued support, we commit to serving with integrity, passion, and purpose,” he said.
A major highlight of the program was the launch of the Community F.E.A.S.T. (Food Empowerment for Academic Success and Transformation.), a student-centered initiative under the university’s Humanity and Welfare agenda aimed at addressing food insecurity on campus.
Vice Chancellor for Student Services Dr. Rohane Derogongan explained that the program provides qualified students with free daily meals, food coupons, access to potable water, and community-based support mechanisms.
“This program reflects our dream of becoming truly supportive of our students,” Dr. Derogongan said, describing FEAST as a compassionate response to challenges that directly affect academic performance and well-being.
The ceremony also recognized December 2025 awardees, honoring faculty, staff, and students whose achievements contributed to the university’s academic and institutional success. The recognition underscored MSU-IIT’s culture of excellence and appreciation for service and dedication.
As the university begins 2026, the first flag raising ceremony, attended by faculty, staff, and student leaders, set the tone for the year ahead, defined by strengthened leadership, cross-sector solidarity, and an institutional commitment to ensuring that no student is left behind.
