Wintermirths Seizes the Crown: JPG ends years-long drought in Debate grand finals

The Junior Philosophers’ Guild’s (JPG) Wintermirths cemented their name in a fierce spar of words and wit, warding off the rising flair of the MSU-IIT Sociology Society’s (MISS) Order of the Prismlit Fairies in a grueling, high-stakes showdown for a new titleholder on February 21, Saturday, at CASS Room 113.

With “Philippine Politics” as a theme, under the motion on the belief that the multi-party system in the Philippines has failed, the Junior Philosophers’ Guild, comprising Sean Aaron Uy, Tresha De Villa, and Laye Ryan Llamera, took the Government bench, locking horns with MISS’ Marxlen Sumondong, Gyen Glaise Decipulo, and Ram Leone Garces.

JPG won in a narrow 3-2 split decision while securing the Finals Best Speaker to Sean Aaron Uy, adding another sparkle to their victory, who delivered a performance as Government Whip during the Grand Finals.

Race of Dissent

Meanwhile, the semis saw the Political Science Society (PSS) Florent Fairies, MSU-IIT Sociology Society (MISS) Order of the Prismlit Fairies, Junior Philosophers' Guild (JPG) Wintermirths, and Psychology Society (PsychSoc) Percipient Naiads advanced after the preliminaries last February 20, Friday.

Conducted in a single-elimination format, all debates revolved around the theme “Arts.” The motions under this theme included: “The rising narrative of ‘separating the art from the artist,’” “Elite patronage in the arts,” and “The influence of Pantone’s ‘Color of the Year.’”

In Room 211, the Political Science Society (PSS) Florent Fairies took the Government bench, defending their motion against the MSU-IIT Sociological Society (MISS) Order of the Prismlit Fairies on the Opposition.

Meanwhile, in Room 212, the Psychology Society (PSYCHSOC) Percipient Naiads represented the Government, clashing with the Junior Philosophers’ Guild (JPG) Wintermirths on the Opposition side.

Both opposition teams, MISS and JPG, soared into the Grand Finals that sealed the fate of their championship bid.
