Mental health advocacy does not end when a month-long celebration draws to a close. Its significance lies in the stories shared, the experiences acknowledged, and the recognition that every individual carries a different journey toward growth.

Holding on to this message, the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) Psychology Society (PsychSoc) marked the culmination of its World Mental Health Awareness Month (WHAM) 2026 celebration through an online program via Google Meet last Friday, October 30.

Anchored on the theme, "The Humanness in Psyche: The Innate Drive toward Self-actualization and Real Change, From Real Lived Experiences," this year's celebration emphasized the human experiences underlying psychological well-being and personal development. Drawing from the concept of self-actualization in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the initiative highlighted the importance of understanding individuals beyond their circumstances and recognizing the different needs that shape their growth.

The culmination provided an opportunity to revisit the month-long celebration's initiatives, activities, and meaningful conversations. More than a closing activity, the gathering brought together the experiences and efforts that carried the campaign's message throughout the month, reinforcing the value of making mental health awareness an ongoing commitment.

The program opened with remarks from MSU-IIT Psychology Society Adviser Ms. Edmarie Zoe Gonzaga, followed by an icebreaker featuring fun facts that encouraged interaction among participants. These activities set the tone for a gathering that placed human connection and shared experiences at the center of the celebration.

A recap of the month's activities and initiatives was then presented by Student Rights and Welfare (STRAW) Chairperson Sam Serrano, revisiting the various efforts undertaken by the organization. The presentation offered a glimpse into the work behind WHAM 2026, recognizing the collective participation and contributions that helped bring its advocacy to life.

Adding a creative highlight to the program, Matheza Niña Academia, a third-year BA Psychology student, delivered a special performance. The gathering also recognized the working committees through the awarding of certificates, acknowledging the individuals whose time and efforts contributed to the successful implementation of the month-long celebration. The virtual gathering proceeded with closing remarks and an evaluation, formally concluding the program.

Ultimately, WMHAM 2026 underscored that mental health advocacy begins with recognizing the person behind every experience. Self-actualization is not a uniform destination, but a continuing process shaped by individual needs, circumstances, and possibilities.

As the celebration came to a close, its message remained: understanding the human psyche requires more than awareness. It calls for empathy, recognition, and a willingness to make space for every lived experience.
