In collaboration with MSU-IIT Young Environmentalist, JPIChE holds its 1st MSU-IIT Biodiversity and Climate Change Student Forum on August 16, 2012 at CED Amphitheater from 1-5pm. Three guest speakers for the said forum were invited, namely: Dr. Emelinda G. Tobias of the College of Science and Mathematics, Dr. David N. Almarez of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, Dr. Mark Anthony J. Torres, a peace research coordinator of the Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao, and lastly, Gabriel Billones who is a student from the College of Engineering.
Dr. Emelinda G. Tobias gave an overview of “Climate Change” in lined with sustainable development. Her whole talk was about climate mitigation and adaptation which could be equaled to pursuing sustainable development. Dr. David N. Almarez discussed about Philippine Biodiversity and the Filipino focused on the distinction and infamy of the Philippines as a nation and a mega diversity country. Furthermore, he tackled about the importance of biodiversity on ecosystem services.
The third speaker, Dr. Mark Anthony Torres generally imparted his knowledge on the societal effects of climate change, including its impacts on the agriculture as well as its physical causes. Also, Gabriel Billones, a BS Chemical Engineering student shared his views on climate change as well as his promotion on the environmental organizations he is into towards saving Mother Nature from human and non-human activities.
There was a series of questions asked by some students who attended the said forum. Mr. Edmark S. Icalina, assisted by Gabriel Billones, distributed the certificates of recognition to the participants and speakers as well. The whole activity ended with a film showing about the different alarming issues of climate change and how one individual can become a catalyst for sustainable development.
