Freshmen
of the College of Arts and Social Sciences got the encouragement to surpass
tertiary milestone after the Coping College Life Symposium spearheaded by the
Guidance and Counseling Center, September 3, 2012 at the MSU-IIT Mini Theatre.
The Counseling Center, which has the
main goal of helping each student understand themselves, was honored to have
Prof. Erik De La Seña and Prof. German Gervacio as speakers of the symposium.
Prof. De La Seña, a faculty of the
Department of Psychology has given his testimonial talk beginning with the
quote “Only few are fortunate to be in college, you here must make the best out
of it”. He shared to the freshmen arachnids a glance in his college social
life, his studies and his extra-curricular affairs. Prof. Gervacio, faculty of
Departamento ng Filipino at Ibang mga Wika, the adviser of Silahis and an
Outstanding Alumni, brought the word “poverty” in the air. He pointed out that we
cannot really deny the fact that poverty can somehow drag us in achieving our
dreams and that in college, some students would just get used to hungriness.
Prof. Michael Alain Mamauag, RGC, the
CASS Guidance counselor also announced what the office offers as services to
the student. With the help of its
extending arm student-related organizations, which are the Student Peer
Facilitators and the Learning Assistance Volunteers (LAV), the Guidance Office is
equipped to promote good mental health as well as capable of conducting free
tutorial sessions for those students who faces difficulty in some of their
subjects.
