CASS Society Mayors 2021-2022

CASS is known to be the institute's home of empaths. With its mantra "Kakambal ng husay at talino ang puso at konsensiya," CASS students embody the value of human society and social relationships with diversity and equality anchored with efficiency and intellect. We are designed to comprehend the camaraderie and connections, especially during the pandemic, and engage with the institutions shaping our existence.

Not just empaths but public servants.

Let us acquaint the newly elected Society Mayors of the College of Arts and Social Sciences for the SY 2021-2022. By apprehending how CASS influenced their development as a daughter/son, friend, and citizen; and hearing their message to students concerning the academic struggles rising from the pandemic.

How has CASS influenced your development as a daughter/son, friend, and citizen?
My education from CASS has allowed me to grow intellectually as a learner and morally as a person. The college's emphasis on not just excellence or "talino" but also on values or "konsensiya" has allowed me to appreciate societal and political issues from broader perspectives and points of view. The culture in CASS has stimulated for me a fertile ground for scholarship and study which in effect, has equipped me with relevant 21st-century skills that are considered important today. CASS has not just prepared me for a productive professional life after university, but more importantly, for life itself. It has placed me in a position to become a contributing force towards the realization of not just the institute's mission and vision but also the broader 2030 Agenda for sustainable development as stipulated in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations. As members of an increasingly hyper globalized world, we are not just called to become responsible citizens of our country, but also and more importantly, as civically engaged and active citizens of the world.

Students are now dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their studies. What message do you want to leave for the Arachnids?

It's my honor to speak to you and let me say this: whenever things get tough, pause when you really need to; but please don't stop! Rest when your mind and body become too overwhelmed and exhausted with all the stresses and noise, but don't quit! Think of education at this (especially hard) times as not a sprint, but a marathon. You are not in a race with anybody, you are only in a race against yourself so take it easy. Learn to forgive yourself and move on. This too will pass, and you will look back on this experience as one of the hardest but the most fulfilling part of your student life. We are in this together. I'm rooting for you all!

How has CASS influenced your development as a daughter/son, friend, and citizen?

I don't think that I'm the kind of person who deals with being a daughter, friend, and citizen with differences. What I am practically shown in the way that I communicate, interact, and act towards everything. I also know that CASS influenced everyone in different lights but somehow I believe that it's with the guidance of what they were before entering college. CASS influenced me to be wary of other people's preferences and figure out how to work through that differences. It also influenced me to be cooperative with others in order to obtain progress that is societal and human development centered.

Students are now dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their studies. What message do you want to leave for the Arachnids?

Every time I'm faced to faced with problems or exhaustion, I always think that night will come and I'll be able to rest or take a break from everything that's bothering me. What I want them to learn from this is time is constantly moving and no matter how lost you are, grieving or anxious about the future everything will pass. I don't think that aside from this I'd be able to say anything else because I want to give a message that can be understood by everyone regardless of the state they're in. It's simple but I think that it is very important to remind everybody that changes will come and choices will not run out.

How has CASS influenced your development as a daughter/son, friend, and citizen?
CASS taught me the value of being one with the people and understanding the beauty of diversity. As someone who grew up in the province, in a primitive household, I was never vocal about how I see myself and superficially took the notion of "growing in your full potential." As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, CASS allowed me to become more vocal and expressive with my sexuality and grow into someone who constantly desires to be the language that will help others overcome their struggles in speaking up for themselves.
Apart from that self-growth, CASS also taught me the importance of taking action, contributing in the ways we know how, and providing an aspiration to my fellow CASSmates. These influences propelled my vision for my society, ABEO, to move forward and help the community "despite our distance.”

Students are now dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their studies. What message do you want to leave for the Arachnids?

A lot of young people today are suffering from the sudden shift to online learning, and the exasperation is never-ending. We also tend to underestimate the importance of rest as well as taking things to a halt. To my CASSmates, let us move forward together but always remember to rest and allow yourself to embrace the possibilities of living. Things may not be easy, but CASS is the powerhouse of resilient and strong individuals! We are malaCASS!

How has CASS influenced your development as a daughter/son, friend, and citizen?

The College of Arts and Social Sciences never failed to remind me to always make use of my heart and conscience in my decision makings especially that I am a youth leader and an active citizen of this country. The college's mantra, "Kakambal ng husay at talino ang puso at konsensya" guided me to become someone competent with a heart and someone that leads other students guided with a conscience.

Students are now dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their studies. What message do you want to leave for the Arachnids?

Maintain a healthy balance between your mental health and your studies; don't push yourself too far. Recognize your barriers; you should be able to see the line between what is too much in too much. You are the most important. Never deprive yourself; you deserve a break, and you're doing well. By just getting to know yourself better, particularly your coping mechanisms, you will be able to balance everything. We can mitigate the effects of the current situation (Covid-19) if we work together by lifting up each other while remaining aware and cherished. Keep going, everyone!

How has CASS influenced your development as a daughter/son, friend, and citizen?

My unexpected admittance to CASS was a golden ticket to a whole lot of possibilities and life-changing influences. CASS is filled with amazing people who inspire me to be a more compassionate daughter, friend, and Filipino citizen. My classmates, professors, and my very supportive family breathe life in me. Dahil sa CASS, mas naging makabuluhan ang aking buhay kolehiyo. I never thought that this college would make me want to contribute and provide more meaning to other people's lives.

What is your message to all CASS students who are now dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their studies?

While we are all waiting to see our fellow Arachnids face-to-face, let’s be there for each other even if we are all screens apart. At CASS, know no boundaries.

How has CASS influenced your development as a son, friend, and citizen?
Before entering college, I was compassionate to the people around me, my family, and my friends. I am someone they ran to, talk to, rant to, someone who's eager to listen regardless of their problems. Someone on whom they could rely, no matter how difficult the situation. However, life is a beach, unfortunate things happened to me, and I got lost.

Luckily, in CASS, I met people similar to me previously, even folks who thought differently than I did. Every day, I am surrounded by incredible people, classmates, professors, and everyone associated with CASS. I got to thinking, and I figured that if they can do things, I can as well. People in my life inspired me to strive harder and be a better version of myself because I believe that every day is a step closer to becoming the person I want to be.

My life has been full of obstacles but with my growth and realizations, I know I will severe. Now, I can breathe comfortably without having doubts and regrets. As a CASS student, I've grown tremendously as a whole being. From someone who was lost to someone who is now firm, who weighs before speaking, a friend to everyone even when I am not needed without being offended, socially aware, compassionate even to strangers, fighting for injustice and discrimination, and most importantly, a home to those who have none. However, I may not be the fullest version of myself right now, but I know that someone is looking up to me, inspired and encouraged, just like how I see my fellow Arachnids. Thus, I will continue to inspire and be inspired as a family, friend, and ordinary citizen.

What is your message to all CASS students who are now dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their studies?

The COVID-19 Pandemic has affected everyone in their daily lives and routines, but we cannot deny that there are students who are particularly affected in an online classroom setting; e-learning is not for everyone. We all have different coping mechanisms and ways of surviving, but some people are unable to do so owing to unjust conditions such as a lack of resources, family and personal responsibilities, and internal battles.

Hence, my message for them would be to keep a hold of your dreams and never let go of them. Things may tighten up, but always remember to take a break, rest, and breathe; and then reassemble yourself on the process, discover motivations, and continue living for your aspirations and inspirations because life is not a race but a journey to enjoy.

Trust me, one day you'll look back on who you were and be able to say, "I survived and will continue to survive."

How has CASS influenced your development as a daughter/son, friend, and citizen?

CASS has changed me in more ways than one. Being amid an accepting, nurturing, and loving community has made me a better person too. Being in CASS has opened my perspective to many things; my definitions of right and wrong have changed for the good. It has made me a more tolerant person, a more patient person, and most specially a more conscientious person.

Students are now dealing with the effects of the pandemic on their studies. What message do you want to leave for the Arachnids?

As a Psychology major student, I want to highlight the importance of taking care of your mental health. I believe that there is so much internalized stigma around taking a breather, especially when the going gets tough, but there is nothing more important than taking care of yourself mentally and physically. Never forget to take some time for yourself to unwind.
