Mr. Ezra C. Macaraeg , the former College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Governor for the Academic Year 2003-2004, and CASS General Assembly Guest Speaker, encouraged Arachnids to unite as one and shared advice in living and sustaining the ‘Arachnid Spirit’.

The Arachnid Spirit is our own concept of the Fighting Spirit. As CASS students, you have to possess the mindset that you can do it,
he emphasized.

Macaraeg was the guest speaker during the 2022 CASS General Assembly and Acquaintance Party (GAAP) held on October 14 at the MSU-IIT Gymnasium. Previously a lecturer at MSU-IIT’s Department of History, he is also a CASS Alumnus who finished a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 2004 and completed a Master’s in History in 2010.

Unite in decision-making. Take the initiative and be innovative,
he remarked, even recalling their moments of triumph for CASS during Palakasan as a result of unity.

Macaraeg proceeded to offer several pieces of advice to the students in empowering their ‘Arachnid Spirit.’ He first highlighted the importance of communication which he described to be ‘the key to survival.’

It doesn’t matter what language you use to communicate with the people around you as long as you do it effectively,
he said.

Building on that, he stressed on his second advice, ‘speaking the language you are born and raised in’. Macaraeg told Arachnids whether that language is Cebuano, Maranao, Espanyol, or even French, what is important is that they are able to convey the message well.

If you know your history, you know who you are. That is the only way you can sustain your identity,
he pointed out as his third advice.

Macaraeg deepened this further with his fourth advice where he shared the relevance of being fully-informed of the activities of the state pertaining to social, political, and even religious matters. He asserted that with the world advancing the way it is, people are often overwhelmed with keeping its demands and it is important that they know when to take a stand on something they believe in.

You need to be emotionally strong and understand society’s demands for social order,
he said being understanding and respectful must overpower personal bias.

He also encouraged Arachnids to develop their self-expression and self-love in manners that they would prefer most notably in clothing.

If you have confusion about what is right and wrong in certain situations, remember to be just,
Macaraeg expressed as his last piece of advice.

This year’s CASS GAAP was held face-to-face for the first time since the pandemic. Led with the theme #Spooktober, the afternoon was dedicated to a series of events including the Oath-taking of Society Officers and competitions such as a Dance Showdown, Spooktober Icon 2022, and Acoustic Jam.
