All student representatives from all societies showcased their storytelling skills through the Chain Storytelling contest at CASSalida last February 20, 2023.They were required to have three representatives for each society and were prohibited from entering the place before their performance. Each representative is given a minute to narrate.
To start, they were given the narrative that says, “You woke up to the sound of footsteps and continuous loud banging outside. You open the window to check where the noises are coming from. But to your surprise, there was no one. Not a single human was out there. You opened your phone and checked the time. It’s 3 A.M., Tuesday. And then…”
The first society to give their narrative were the representatives of Junior Philosophers’ Guild. Their story revolved around a character who realizes that his life may be sad, but his loved ones were outside that dark place. And that life really is worth living because he could do so much more with it. So, he went to school happy, because he goes to MSU-IIT— where everything is up to a quality.
Next were the representatives of KAPILAS-Bayan. They were on the realistic approach wherein they talked about a student waking up late that leads to breaking the school dress code in their school. So, the mother advised her child to transfer school— at MSU-IIT because there is no dress code there, and her child can express themselves more.
The third society is the Political Science Society. They were more on the realistic political and fun side wherein they tell a story about a girl having a huge amount of debt from her landlady, Aling Marites. She then did a monologue stating how the country faces problems like the increasing rate of inflation and the prices of onions, the SOGIE Bill not being passed, and the lack of nurses due to their small salary. She stated that what we need the most is ‘Unity’.
Next is the representatives of the Historical Society, where they tell a story about a girl dreaming about different things like being smashed by debris from the second floor of their house and waking up to it.
The Psychological Society shares a fantasy story with a great moral lesson wherein one morning, two persons from opposite social classes swapped bodies. The reason for it was because the girl from the upper class needed to learn the lesson of being kind to everyone around her. After 24 hours, they returned to their original bodies but she never forgot the lesson she had learned during that time.
The sixth society to perform is the Sociology Society. They shared a Fable about a one-eyed chicken, Antonio and his owner. The owner that woke up in the narrative found out that he became Antonio while inside a cockfighting arena in search of his chicken Antonio. Later on, he was transferred to be butchered with other chickens but struggled to seek help since no one could understand him. Fortunately, it was all a dream so he woke up and found out that Antonio was on a pan fried oil.
The last but definitely not the least are the representatives from ABEO. They shared a story with deep emotions of the character seeing himself sleeping. He was confused with the reason behind it; too much studying, apparently. He came back to his body from the sound of his mother asking if he had an exam within that day. They ended it with a reminder to put themselves first before it will turn into something unusual.
The Chain Storytelling ended with the audience placing their bets and recalling the memorable stories that they heard during the program.
