The MSU-IIT Department of English, and the Faculty of Language Education of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Indonesia, recently held a 3-day extension project, "Communicate in English with Us (ComE with Us!): A Teacher Mentoring Program on the Use of ICT in Differentiated Instruction (DI) and Project Based Learning (PBL) Towards Inclusive Education".

The project, which aimed to improve English language pedagogical practices and provide innovative ideas for classroom instruction in the digital age, was held at the College of Arts and Social Sciences.

Numerous educators from different secondary schools, including Tubaran National High School, Ditucalan National High School, MSU-IIT Integrated Developmental School (IDS), and Tubaran National High School-Lanipao Annex, attended the event to learn new insights and improve their teaching strategies, fitting for the 21st-century education.

Greeting everyone with enthusiasm, Dr. Nancy Echavez, the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs, formally welcomed the teacher-participants in her welcoming address.

“I hope that everyone takes this time to collaborate and meaningfully discover the range that they can [form] in creating a meaningful and engaging classroom,” Dr. Echavez stated.

Prof. Eko Purwanti, Ph.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Language delivered a message in behalf of the UMY, “Language is a very vital component of the society, and it is our responsibility to prepare [the students] for the challenges they will face in the rapidly changing world. [...] Together we will strive to create a learning environment that is welcoming, supportive, and engaging.”

Coming from the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Dr. Endro Dwi Hatmanto discussed the Differentiated Instructions (DI) for English Language Teaching. Dr. Hatmanto shared how he uses differentiated instruction in the classroom in order to cater to the individual learning capabilities and needs of his students.

Reiterating some points from Dr. Hatmanto’s points in Differentiated Introduction (DI), Dr. Merceditha Alicando continued with her discussion on Differentiated Introduction for Listening and Reading: Some Tips and Strategies.

Continuing the discussion, Prof. Josephine May Grace Famoso delivered her topic in DIfferentiated Instruction in Writing, followed by Prof. Onnah Pierre Talle talking about Differentiated Instruction in Speaking.

Differentiated Instruction does not stop at just how it should be applied in teaching various skills, it can also be integrated in the teachers’ lesson planning, which was discussed in Ms. Gregoria Bado and Ms. Louella Valendez’s—resource speakers from Iligan City East National High School—discussion on Designing a Differentiated Instruction Lesson Plan.

The lecture was followed with an assessment activity in differentiated instruction for the teacher-participants. The participants were grouped according to the subjects that they were teaching in their schools. The teacher-participants were actively engaging and enthusiastic, as they worked collaboratively to design a differentiated lesson plan.

The first day of the extension project concluded after Prof. Lynrose Jane Genon introduced the teacher-participants to the basics of action research.
