CASS Debate Teams Pushes to Round 3

Firmly standing on their grounds, the CASS debate teams safely bridged rounds 1 and 2 at the first installation of MSU IIT’s Chancellor’s Cup, yesterday, April 23, 2023, held in rooms 202-207 and 303-305 at the College of Education (CED).

Facilitated by the MSU IIT Debate Varsity (MIDV), the British Parliamentary Debate style was followed. Four teams will participate in one round— two teams representing the Government, and two teams representing the Opposition. The CASS debate team was divided into four groups, comprising two members, namely: CASS A, CASS B, CASS C, and CASS D.

Each round had a different topic, and was centered on a single theme and a single motion for all the match-ups, provided by the MIDV at the convening hall, CASS rooms 220-222, 20 minutes prior to the beginning of the first speech.

Round 1: Technology
Motion: THR the fast-paced and unregulated development of Advanced AI Held in the morning, from 8 AM to 11 PM, teams met at the convening hall before proceeding to their designated rooms at the College of Education where they are to prepare their speeches for the debate.

Standing on the Opening Opposition (OO), CASS A scored 3 points against CHS C, CEBA C, and CCS D.

CASS B who stood on the Closing Opposition (CO) against CED B, CSM A, and CED D scored 2 points during the round.

CASS C on the other hand scored 1 point for the round, representing the Government (Closing Government) against CSM B, CSM C, and CHS A.

Same as CASS C, CASS D scored 1 point standing on the Closing Opposition (CO) against CEBA B, Swing Team A, and CCS C.

Round 2: Feminism
Motion: Motion: TH celebrates the depiction of maternal ambivalence in media and literature

Held in the afternoon, from 1 PM to 5 PM, round 2 follows the same procedures as the round 1; the teams met at the convening hall where the theme and motion was announced, before they proceeded to their designated areas at CED to prepare for their speeches.

Contrast to Round 1, CASS A on the Closing Opposition (CO) scored 0 points against CSM A, CEBA A, and COE A.

As well as CASS B on the Closing Opposition (CO) against CSM B, CCS B, and CED A, scored 0 points for the second round.

CASS C and D faced off with each other; CASS C representing the Government bench and CASS D representing the opposition. Both CASS C and D recovered from their 1 point during the first round, scoring 3 points and 2 points respectively.

The teams will proceed to round 3 this April 24, 2023; and utilize their wits and showcase their grit to overcome their opponents, to represent the College of Arts and Social Sciences all the way to the grand finals.
