In the heart of Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), a web of excitement is woven as the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) geared up for the start of a new academic year. As the academic season unfolds, students within CASS— aptly referred to as “Arachnids” for their insatiable curiosity and boundless quest for knowledge— prepare to embark on a captivating journey of learning and exploration.
The moniker “CASSa of Learning” encapsulates the essence of this college’s dedication to fostering intellectual curiosity, creativity, and engagement among its students. Like the intricate threads of a spider’s web, CASS intertwines various disciplines, forming a vibrant tapestry of arts, humanities, and social sciences. As the Arachnids of CASS prepare to take center stage, they exemplify a community bound by a shared passion for discovering the complexities of human thought, expression, and societal dynamics.
As the doors of CASS swung open to welcome its students for the upcoming academic year, Freshmen Arachnids shared their feelings and experiences on their first day as college students. Some felt nervous, others felt excited, and some felt okay during the opening of the academic year.
When asked about what they are looking forward to in their first year, April Roz Jutba, a BA History major, talked about her desire to explore CASS and also learn more about herself along the way. She described feeling both nervous and pressured during her first day.
Meanwhile, Gemima Pearl Estoqiua, also a BA History major, shared that she felt fine. According to her, it will be an unforgettable day in her life. Anticipating the challenges and pressures that lie ahead, she hopes to embrace them without regrets. Based on the perspectives shared by both BA History freshmen, their initial day at CASS was marked by a shared sense of enjoyment.
Amenoddin Arthur Pasandalan from the Sociology Society also described his first day as ‘a very nice experience’ after witnessing how lively the people in CASS are. He claims to be looking forward to gaining more knowledge about his major of choice, as he plans to proceed to law school after.
Experiencing a blend of nerves due to the new environment and the absence of familiar blockmates, Wella Mae Antiquina, a BA Psychology major, shared that she hopes to forge new friendships as time passes and looks forward to delving deeper into her program of study.
On the other hand, BA Literary and Cultural Studies major, Adreign Xenrity Colot conveyed her excitement on the first day, expressing her anticipation of gaining knowledge and forming friendships within her field.
The “CASSa of Learning” has become a hub of intellectual vibrancy, where Arachnids cocoon themselves in knowledge, emerging not only as individuals embarking on a journey of academic discovery, but also as weavers of bonds that are sure to last a lifetime.
