KAPILAS-Bayan: Fostering the Filipino Identity

The Kabataang Pilipinong Aakay sa Bayan (KAPILAS-Bayan) displayed their ingenuity and creative prowess as they showcased the posters of their society’s original films as a central highlight within their booth.

Seeking to defy the usual stereotypes linked to “wika” and “panitikan,” KAPILAS-Bayan Mayor Clariza Jane Ovillo highlighted their booth’s intention to convey the message that their society encompasses more than written works and research, extending also to other creative mediums such as theater plays and variety shows.

“The KAPILAS-Bayan’s main focus is on strengthening our Filipino-ness. We study and nurture what we are, as people living in Mindanao, and try to continue and preserve that identity,” Ovillo stated in a written interview.

When asked about what she would like to say to those who may still be undecided, the KAPILAS-Bayan Mayor offered advice to never judge a program early, drawing from her own experience of finding an unexpected sense of belonging within her department. She elaborated on how KAPILAS-Bayan provided her with a platform to grow, engage in directing theater plays, and produce research and literary works.

“I have come to learn that strengthening our regional identity will help strengthen our national identity. And I think that’s important because if you know who and where you come from, it would be very easy to love yourself and your country,” she shared.

Amidst the excitement of Welcome Week celebrations, the 2023 Organization Fair shines as a notable highlight, extending an invitation to students to delve into organizations that align with their interests. On August 23, the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) officially opened the fair, unveiling the booths of its seven societies.
