Fresh Start: CASSayuran Assembles New Members In Inaugural Orientation

In a bid to foster a welcoming environment for newcomers and reaffirm returnees, CASSayuran staff convened for its inaugural orientation on September 6, 2023, uniting the journalists in setting the stage for a dynamic academic year ahead.

Led by Editor-In-Chief, Jemylene Lico, the gathering saw the active participation of 30 out of the 43 members of the publication and featured the presence and insights of Prof. Sittie Noffaisah B. Pasandalan, CASS Assistant Dean and CASSayuran Adviser.

“Where you would bring CASSayuran or where CASSayuran would be is dependent on how the editorial board, together with the staff members, would decide. It will be you who will decide as to where you would bring CASSayuran, not me,” emphasized Prof. Pasandalan on the independence of the publication from administrative influence.

She briefly talked of the founding of the college publication and the changes it has undergone throughout the years, essentially reminding the journalists of their pivotal role and responsibility in upholding the principles upon which CASSayuran was built.

Following these messages, an introduction session commenced, allowing the members to present themselves by name, position, and their expectations for their tenure at CASSayuran. This part served to recognize both the editorial board, the writing heads, and the members of each committee for this academic year.

EIC Jemylene Lico then briefly delved into the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, elucidating its significance and the implications it holds for the student publication. Along with this, she elaborated on the privileges that accompany CASSayuran membership, including streamlined access to school events for coverage purposes, exemption from the sign-in/sign-out requirement during college and institute events, and the perk of having one’s works published on the official blog site.

After a quick rundown of the general rules that encompass the proper and improper usage of the publication’s official uniform and IDs, a question and answer session concluded the orientation.

This year's new addition will take on sustaining the journalistic principles and vision under the 'one headship but plural in leadership' adage that the new editorial board upholds.
