"Gentleness does not equate to slacking, or giving up, or being lazy. It means [getting up] from harshness and violence. It means working towards our goals in an encouraging, peaceful, and caring way."
These were the exact words uttered by Speaker Rhoie Jhannarie D. Omlero, RPm, JD, during the College Life Symposium of the College of Arts and Sciences (CASS) by the Office of Guidance and Counseling held today, September 13, 2023, at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology Gymnasium.
Omlero emphasized the importance of being gentle and kind to oneself in her motivational speech, sharing that this mantra of hers really did its duty when she entered law school.
"I'm pretty sure that you have entered IIT and your course competitively, for sure [you reviewed well, you were nervous for the SASE results, and that was not an easy experience]. So let me ask you, how kind were you to yourself during that process?" said Omero.
She added, "If you have achieved getting into IIT and your course, maybe your dream course or the course given to you, let me break it to you: your college life will not be just about academics."
Omlero also commended the vision of MSU-IIT, saying that it truly upholds its ideals of developing an individual holistically.
Omlero herself is a product of the institution as she was an Integrated Developmental School (IDS) student during high school, pursued BS Psychology as an undergraduate course, and finished his Juris Doctor degree in MSU Law Iligan Campus—all with flying colors.
Moreover, during the open forum session of the symposium, Omlero along with another speaker, Michae Ella Digo, was asked by CASS students varying questions on navigating college life.
On a query regarding fostering inner kindness among people who grew up in a competitive environment, Omlero remarked, "Let go of the things that are no longer your control."
