Akin to scores of colors accentuating various booths, students of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) ticked a long list of engaging activities in observance of Mental Health Month, on October 11, 2023.
They expressed the importance of these avenues in acknowledging student well-being amidst the rigors of academic challenges as something to look forward to.
“Having at least one day to have fun with their fellow peers and interact with new people is a good way to help students feel better,” said first-year BS Civil Engineering student Emmanuel Bryan Batoy. He also extended his appreciation of how specific gimmicks are incepted in a way to foster closer ties even from a fellow student. The same sentiment was also shared by a student from CASS, Baby Lou Fuentes, stressing that apart from it being a break, walking past the halls is also an opportunity to “reconnect and socialize” with the campus community.
Shared Commitment
Among the activities available for everyone are initiatives hosted by the MSU-IIT Office of the Guidance and Counseling together with the Organization of Student Peer Facilitator (OSPF), and Kataas-taasang Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral (KASAMA), namely, the Mental Health Forum, Open Talk: Matters of Heart, Film Viewing, and the Open Talk: Matters of the Mind.
Moreover, The Psychology Society also fronts this year’s celebration of Mental Health Month, mounting interactive installations in the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Old Building Lobby and in front of the institute mini-theatre. A mix of creative and expressive platforms, and playful conduits are the major must-tries they offered.
With mental health advocacy as something inextricably linked to their pursuit, the Psychology Society wished for everyone to internalize the message of this year’s theme revolving around mental health as a universal right. Furthermore, the society also hinted at an upcoming slate of activities in CASS on October 16, saying the booths are only a “teaser”.
From students spearheading events and students joining in is more than just a momentary display of merriment but a communal expression of responsibility in ensuring everyone takes a hold of this universal right— a commitment IITians share with their fellow students.
