In light of recent tragedies, the Kataastaasang Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral (KASAMA), along with Executive Councils and Campus Organizations, brought together IITians in a heartfelt gesture of support and prayers through a Candle Lighting and Solidarity Walk last Friday, December 15, 2023.
“This afternoon’s solidarity walk we offer to the victims, to the bereaved families of those who died in the incident, and the entire Marawi community. We are one family. We are one MSU. Like the body, when one is suffering, the other parts can also feel,” Chancellor Alizedney Ditucalan emphasized in his opening message.
Chancellor Ditucalan reiterated his shared sentiment with KASAMA regarding the decision to postpone the General Assembly and Year-End Party (GAYEC) out of respect for the tragedy that occurred.
“We assure you and your parents that the university is not slipping. We are really tightening all the measures we can do in order to ensure your loved ones can sleep soundly, [knowing] that you are in good hands,” he also highlighted.
The event commenced with students assembling at the Old CASS Building Lobby and then walking together to Rizal Park, carrying lighted candles. KASAMA officers Hermione Sansona and Franzyn Incon led the tribute proper as students sang along to ‘Heal the World’ by Michael Jackson and ‘Leaves’ by Ben&Ben. Interfaith prayers were then offered and led by representatives from Christ Youth in Action (CYA) and Christians on Campus (COC).
In KASAMA President Lugille Castardo's closing message, she expressed her gratitude and appreciation to the various student organizations that extended their time and effort to assist the University in aiding the student evacuees from MSU-Marawi, who were housed at the gymnasium on the day of the bombing incident, December 3.
