Under the theme, "Panitikan at Kapayapaan," the KAPILAS-Bayan, along with the Departamento ng Filipino at Ibang mga Wika (DFIW), shared a glimpse of festivity in an inaugural program for Buwan ng Panitikan 2024, held at the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Lawn, on April 3, 2024.

The program featured pieces of literature enlivened with talents and creativity starting from spoken poetry, song renditions, and imaginatively vibrant folklore icons.

In her opening remarks, CASS Dean Dr. Marie Joy Banawa reminded students of their role as "iskolar ng bayan" in championing peace in various ways and pursuits, especially in the relevance of "panitikan" that is now ever-present in the use of social media.

On a similar note, guest speaker Erica Abejuela, former Editor-in-Chief of CASSayuran and currently taking up an MA in Philippine Literature at the university, urged fellow literary enthusiasts to pioneer discussions on the contribution of literature in maintaining and fostering peace.

"Sa pamamagitan nito, lalo nating napapayaman ang konsepto ng kapayapaan at maipaparating sa mamamayang Pilipino ang papel ng panitikan sa lipunan," she added.

Abejuela extended a poignant tale of how literature has moved heights for her to realize her space in the field.

She also likened the significance of panitikan at kapayapaan in the act of writing as a release of emotion—requisite to understanding oneself.

"Ngunit kapag isinasatitik natin ang ating nadarama, kapag sinusubukan nating isulat ang ating kaisipan, kahit na magulo, binibigyan nitong daluyan ang ating emosyon at doon natin mauunawaan ang ating sarili," she said.

Officially opening the Buwan ng Panitikan 2024, department chairperson Dr. Mary Ann Sandoval expressed gratitude to KAPILAS-Bayan as partners in advancing the DFIW's endeavors. She also addressed graduating students, hoping that the panitikan — encompassing the lessons they read and learned from — will help them towards the path they'll soon choose to chart.

Meanwhile, KAPILAS-Bayan Mayor Clariza Jane Ovillo revealed that there are more slate of activities to come within this month as the celebration is now set in motion.
