Is it worth the wait? This is a question we've all asked ourselves at some point. After enduring countless setbacks, heartbreaks, and self-doubt, what does it truly feel like to finally achieve a long-held dream? The anticipation, dreams, and countless scenarios played out in your mind—these are all part of the journey. Yet, even as that dream becomes reality, new questions and anxieties can arise. It's in navigating these uncharted waters, embracing the unexpected, and cherishing the entire experience that we truly find fulfillment and create lasting memories.
Farhana Borowa, an incoming fourth-year Philosophy student at MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, has brought honor to the institution by being selected as one of the top 50 delegates among 1,000 applicants from across the Asia Pacific region for the 2024 Asia Pacific Youth Leaders Summit (APYLS). Held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, last July 25-27, the summit gathered young leaders to address global challenges. Farhana's exceptional qualities and potential earned her the prestigious title of Asia-Pacific Leaders Ambassador. APYLS, an annual international conference dedicated to developing future leaders, aims to equip young people with the skills and knowledge to create solutions to global problems.
The news of being selected as one of the 50 delegates sank in late at night when she was about to sleep, but she remembered the summit she had applied for over the past two weeks. "I got goosebumps as I saw that I was congratulated by the program, telling me that I got selected as one of the top 50 delegates for the summit," she recounted. A wave of mixed emotions washed over her—inconceivable and delightful. "I even got tears of joy as I looked back on my past experiences of applying for some international leadership programs," she said, reflecting on how those downfalls were worth it. Her first application had ended in rejection, and she had withdrawn her second attempt due to academic conflicts. But this time felt different. "This feels like as [feels as] if the universe has heard me that this time, I have a huge chance that I will make it to the event."
The question about how her role as a CASS student shaped her perspective on the issues discussed at the summit brought a reflective smile to her face. "This question is pretty nice because being a CASS student, specifically as a Philosophy student, it totally shaped my ideas that I shared with the other delegates and during the public forum," she explained. "I could say that this is salient, and it's like an 'important secret weapon I brought with me in going to war' illustration." Being a CASS student had made her socially aware of various issues, so she had no trouble sharing her thoughts when certain social matters were brought up. "Thus, being a Philosophy student has molded me into a critical thinking being," she said, emphasizing how this background allowed her to actively interact in open discussions and pose insightful questions.
Harking back, her initial stride was not without countless doubts. "What if I don't gain friends? What if they find me lame and not worthy of the summit? What if I stutter during my speeches? What if I am left out and all alone during the summit?" These questions plagued her as she was about to be dropped off by her family at the airport. However, upon arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, she was warmly greeted by other delegates. "They were all so friendly. Their energy was like a communicable disease that I got one from [got from] them and I shifted from an introverted person to an extroverted one." She realized that staying true to herself was the key to attracting people. She bonded with the other delegates and made a circle of friends, overcoming her initial fears.
When asked about the key takeaways from the summit, she highlighted two main lessons. "There are two key takeaways I gained from the summit, and these are how to enhance public speaking and how to sell your idea," she began. She particularly enjoyed the session ‘From Zero to Hero,’ which emphasized that improving public speaking can make you a hero by giving a voice to the voiceless and allowing them to be seen by the masses. "Public speaking is one of my insecurities, but after I learned to do a proper public speech, it helped me to [with] my speaking forum and talking in front of the delegates. Having a clear mind and concentration are pivot [pivotal] in public speaking," she explained. Additionally, she was surprised to discover the significance of personal branding in selling ideas. "I was shocked how I just knew that personal branding is significant on [in] how you can persuade people. It is not how interesting your story is but the aura and power of your presence are what makes your ideas sold [sell] out." This realization sheds light on why some great stories or literature might not gain popularity—personal image is also crucial.
Based on her experience, she offered some straightforward advice for aspiring young leaders who want to participate in international platforms. "These might sound 'overrated,' but never give up and trust the process." She emphasized the importance of following one's passion. "When you want to pursue such things that what makes you think what’s right and what your heart wants, then just go straight and never look back. Hurdles are part of success, and without them, 'authentic' goals cannot be achieved." She also warned against the pitfalls of perfectionism. "Being a perfectionist is a disease that needs to be combatted as it will drive you insane for worrying for one's future." Reflecting on her own experience, she noted, "When I got in [to] Malaysia, the one thing I keep [kept] reminding to myself [reminding myself] is [was] 'I'm here for my present and will live in the moment. I'm not here for any awards in the future but for "that'' experience.'" She concluded, "Therefore, I 'authentically' enjoyed my participation in APLS, where I consider it one of the best things happened in my life."
Farhana's journey is a testament to the enduring power of hope and perseverance. Her path, marked by setbacks and self-doubt, ultimately led to a resounding victory, inspiring others to believe in the power of their dreams. It is a reminder that every challenge is an opportunity for growth and that with perseverance and a steadfast belief in oneself, every dream, no matter how distant it may seem, is within reach. Her words serve as a beacon for aspiring leaders, illuminating the path toward realizing their dreams. Remember, every setback is a setup for a comeback, and every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to your ultimate goal. Just like her, dare to dream, believe in yourself, and let your passion be your compass. Your story is yet to be written, and the world is eagerly awaiting your next chapter.
