Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology’s (MSU-IIT) Department of Political Science and Political Science Society premiered the inaugural episode of POLITalks: Usapang Pulitika, Usapang Kritikal on Wednesday, September 18, tackling the West Philippines Sea dispute with guest speaker, Atty. Janodin Marohombsar.
In partnership with the Institute for Policy Innovation and Leadership, Policy Center on Governance, Public Leadership and Management, the four-month-long online series was designed to create a space for discussing political topics that not only aid in understanding its various underpinnings but also highlight its relevance to people’s lives.
Atty. Janodin Marohombsar from the Department of Political Science at MSU-IIT, who specializes in Public International Law and Peace Education, led the discussion in the first episode.
In his presentation, he showcased the economic importance of the West Philippine Sea, highlighting its rich and abundant aquatic resources, oil, natural gas, as well as its significance to global shipping trade.
Atty. Marohombsar also delved into the historical underpinnings of the dispute and the legal-political challenges, emphasizing the contrasting approaches of the Duterte and Marcos Administrations—the Duterte Administration was China-friendly, while Marcos pursued stronger ties with the United States of America (USA).
This online series aimed to not only deepen attendees’ political understanding but also to empower them to participate in national and international affairs, as affirmed by Atty. Marohombsar, who asserted that being apolitical is a “red flag”. He encouraged students to engage in political discourse as they are more than capable of doing so.
Krizylle Louise Giltendez, a first-year BA Political Science student expressed her thoughts on the discussion. “I’m grateful that we have this source of information, as it allows students to be well-informed about the discourse between the Philippines and China, since not everyone has the privilege of open access to this information,” she said.
Adding to this sentiment, she stated that this event is crucial for both students and the general population, as it produces well-informed citizens, encourages meaningful discussions, and combats misinformation.
The POLITalks online series is set to be followed by sessions focused on the following topics: the US Elections and its impact on the Global South, updates on the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as part of the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) Month special, and the celebration and discussion of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as the culmination of the series.
