Shaping the Future: CASS Students Gain Leadership Insights in Governance Forum

Have you ever realized that the future of the country could be shaped by your own hands—the decisions you make, the actions you take, and the ideas you bring to life? Imagine a society transformed, driven by students who understand their potential to change the world. In a time when fresh perspectives are desperately needed, one thing is certain: the next wave of leaders could very well come from today’s classrooms.

A vision of empowered students was at the heart of a significant discussion on October 16, when Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) welcomed a visiting delegation from Mulawarman University’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Indonesia. Hosted by the College of Arts and Social Sciences’ (CASS) Department of Political Science and Department of Sociology, Dr. Daryono, one of the visiting professors, led a meaningful forum on governance and leadership.

He delivered a comprehensive presentation on politics and governance, addressing the critical roles these play in shaping societies. Speaking to third-year sociology students, he offered valuable insights into governance systems and the challenges of fostering transparency and accountability in leadership which are relevant not only in Indonesia but also in the broader global context, including the Philippines.

As the Philippines prepares for its upcoming elections, Mary Gwyneth Manlapaz asked during the question and answer session about the qualifications for running for office in Indonesia. Dr. Daryono responded that having substantial financial resources is a key requirement in Indonesian politics. He argued that this can help candidates prevent practicing corruption and ensure that they prioritize public service over personal gain.

In addition, Caleb James Noble asked whether a criminal record would bar someone from running for a position in Indonesia. The speaker responded that a conviction of five years or more would render a person ineligible, unlike in the Philippines.

These questions reflect the curiosity and eagerness of students to understand how governance works in different political systems. When asked how young people, particularly students, can play a role in shaping the future of politics and governance, Dr. Daryono highlighted the significance of political awareness. He stated, “Politics is... I think it’s the most important knowledge in the world, so young people should learn about it. When they are aware of politics, they can predict. They can join political organizations and make plans about the future through political issues.”

He also likened politics to an opportunity waiting to be seized, explaining, “In my opinion, university students should realize the main point of politics. Politics is like a door—once you step inside, you can do anything, and you can gain power through it.”

As the forum concluded, it became clear that the lessons extended far beyond the classroom. MSU-IIT, embodying its vision of influencing the future, is not merely focused on academic excellence but also on nurturing the kind of leadership that transcends campus walls. Through events like this governance forum, students are reminded that the skills and insights they gain can influence every corner of society. Whether in politics, governance, or community service, their actions ripple outward, creating a profound impact on the nation’s future.

The discussions sparked by the Indonesian delegation are a testament to how MSU-IIT empowers its students to think critically, engage in dialogue, and contribute to a better society. As Dr. Daryono emphasized, politics is a door waiting to be opened, and the future is shaped by those who step through it. At MSU-IIT, students are not just preparing for their careers—they are preparing to shape the world. Because ultimately, the future we create is the one we all must live in.
