On Monday, January 27, the Institute’s Multipurpose Hall buzzed with excitement as Narnia’s Basketball tournament unfolded in a single, jam-packed day, with preliminary rounds, semifinals, and the championship packed into the schedule, delivering non-stop action for players and fans alike.
In the first preliminary game of the afternoon, Kabataang Pilipinong Aakay sa Bayan’s (KAPILAS-Bayan) Isle of Neoleides secured a 113-90 victory over Psychology Society’s (PsychSoc) Isle of Psyche and eliminated them from the tournament. Both teams put up a strong fight, but KAPILAS-Bayan’s steady performance helped them clinch the win.
In the second preliminary game, MSU-IIT Historical Society’s (MIHS) Isle of Chronos easily defeated the Junior Philosophers’ Guild’s (JPG) Isle of Sophia with a score of 80-61. With the win, Chronos finished the preliminary round undefeated, earning a spot in the championship game. Their advancement to the finals set the stage for a stepladder semifinal format in the tournament.
The semifinal showdown between Literature, Language, and Culture Society’s (LILACS) Isle of Glossa and KAPILAS-Bayan’s Neoleides was a hard-fought contest, with both teams exchanging leads throughout. In the final moments, Jason Principe of LILACS hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, securing a dramatic 70-68 victory for LILACS’ Glossa.
Following their win against Neoleides, Glossa faced JPG’s Sophia in the next semifinal. Sophia dominated the matchup, securing a commanding 89-63 victory to earn their spot in the championship game against the defending champion, Chronos.
The championship game between Chronos and Sophia, which was expected to be a fierce battle, in a playful twist, took on a much lighter tone. As both teams dribbled a long way, the exhaustion was turned into entertainment for both players and the audience.
With Chronos taking the lead, a lively concession became the court's spectacle as both teams began cheering for their opponents, even allowing fans to take a free throw.
History’s Chronos capped off their remarkable run with a dominant 91-61 win over JPG’s Sophia in the championship, claiming their second consecutive title. Despite a more relaxed approach to the game, Chronos impressive play on both ends of the court led to a decisive victory, securing their place as back-to-back champions.
When asked about the championship victory, Jorge Semblante, 3rd Year from History shared, “First of all, I’m happy because we were able to defend the crown. The journey was tiring, yet fun.”
With their back-to-back championship victory, the Historical Society has firmly established their dominance in the tournament. As they celebrate their hard-earned success, all eyes will be on them next season to see if they can continue their winning streak and defend their title once again.
