The Legacy Continues: PSS’ Logos Seizes Debate Championship

The Political Science Society (PSS) took home the grand finals championship title, continuing its 12-year winning streak after prevailing over the other breaking teams during the second day of debate on Monday, January 27.

Psychology Society’s (PsychSoc) Isle of Psyche, Junior Philosophers Guild’s (JPG) Isle of Sophia , Literature, Language, and Culture Society’s (LILACS) Isle of Glossa, and PSS advanced to the out rounds to debate the motion, “This house believes that the primary purpose of higher education is to advance knowledge rather than to teach students.”

In the semifinals, PSS emerged victorious over PsychSoc by a close margin, while LILACS defeated JPG in a unanimous decision, securing their spots in the grand finals.

In the fight for the championship, PSS and LILACS debated the motion, “This house, as the CASS EC, would abolish the grievance system during CASS Days,” where PSS triumphed with a 4-1 split decision.

The winning team, composed of Norman Legaspino (first-year), Prince Delfino (second-year), and Lovelen Alcantara (third-year), credited their success to overcoming challenges, particularly in communication, as they were a team made up of members from different year levels.

Alcantara, awarded Finals Best Speaker, reflected on the journey and expressed how difficult it had been leading up to grand finals, saying, “I was struggling to sleep, and actually, last night, I even dreamed that we lost.”

Legaspino described the competition as exhausting yet rewarding, adding, “We came back as the fourth-breaking team, made it to the semis, and then actually won the finals. I am really proud to preserve the legacy of PSS in debate.”

Despite the challenges, PSS persevered as underdogs, entering the semis as the last-breaking team but still winning the championship.

During the awarding ceremony, the Overall Best Speaker title went to PsychSoc’s Jaebelle Eltanal, who earned an average of 75.33 speaker points.
