The College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) brought home its first Chancellor’s Cup after Shene Taer and Rey Sialana of CASS B emerged as the overall champions in the prestigious debate tilt of Palakasan 2025, on Friday, April 4, at the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) Mini Theater.
Surging the grands, CASS Tali delivered half of its representatives in the upshot with CASS B’s (Opening Opposition) Taer and Sialana and CASS A (Closing Opposition), consisting of Norman Legaspino Jr and Trisha Marie Destura.
They went head-to-head with two teams from CCS Beta Byte seated on the Government bench—CCS A as the Opening Government (OG) and CCS C as the Closing Government (CG). The debate revolved around the theme “Philippine Journalism,” with the motion: “This House Believes That Student Publications of Filipino Universities Should Prioritize Voicing Political Advocacy in the Face of Controversy.”
CASS Tali also secures numerous Best Speaker Awards with Sean Aaron Uy and Gregory Cabato of CASS C, both tying at 7th place with 296 speaker points, Trisha Marie Destura of CASS A at 5th place with 298 speaker points, and Norman Legaspino at 4th place with 299 speaker points.
Still reeling from the excitement of making it to the grand finals, Shene Taer shared how overwhelmed she felt by both the victory and the unwavering support of her fellow CASS Arachnids who came to watch the tournament. “I still have goosebumps until now; I’m really honored to have brought the College of Arts and Sciences to CC, and honestly, I don't deserve to celebrate this in isolation when in fact this event wouldn’t have been possible without the people who were there for me.”
Legaspino of CASS A, who has only just dabbled in debate this year, expressed his joy of having participated and competed amongst highly-skilled and talented students, saying “As a first timer, I’m really happy to have been able to participate in a university wide competition in which it encompasses talented debaters, and grounded me in experience that I have a lot to learn throughout my debating career, if I could have one.”
CASS Tali debaters have truly proven themselves to be the sharpest wits of townsville, having triumphed over 20 teams and emerging victorious, bringing home CASS Tali’s first victory in the 3rd installation of Chancellor’s Cup.
